Coach Steve Shankweiller-Offensive Coordinator-East Carolina University
Coach Shank has played a pivotal role in the resurgance of the Pirate Football Program. Their win over Boise State this past Bowl Season was a huge step in bringing national attention to East Carolina's Football Program.
Steve Shankweiler just completed his third season of his third tour of duty as East Carolina's offensive coordinator and line coach after rejoining the Pirates' staff Dec. 8, 2004.
Success has been synonymous with Shankweiler, who has been a part of five bowl appearances while at ECU, which includes the Pirates' magical run in 1991 that resulted in a Peach Bowl win over N.C. State and the revitalization of the program that included a Papajohns.com Bowl showing in 2006.
His third appointment at East Carolina follows a pair of earlier tenures under head coaches Art Baker and Bill Lewis (1987-1991), and Steve Logan (1998-2002).
After being named offensive line coach by Skip Holtz, Shankweiler was quickly elevated to the position of offensive coordinator a few weeks later.
In 2005, he guided a unit that passed for 2,816 yards, which ranked as the highest total in nearly 10 years (1996) and fourth-best all-time. In addition, Shankweiler coordinated an offense that averaged 393.5 total yards per game, a mark which stands among the school's top 10 in history.
Shankweiler followed with another stellar performance a year later, coordinating a unit that set a new school single-season record for first downs (264) while turning in the school's third-best passing mark (3,024 yards) and sixth-best total offense tally (4,526) in the program's annals. Perhaps more impressive was that the success came behind a line he developed and tutored which featured just one senior and two full-time rookie starters who both earned selection to the Conference USA All-Freshman squads (media and coaches).
Prior to his arrival at ECU, Shankweiler served as offensive line coach at South Carolina in 2004 after spending the previous season in the same capacity at the University of Cincinnati.
After Shankweiler joined the ECU staff in 1998 as offensive line coach, he immediately helped the Pirates to three consecutive winning seasons and bowl appearances in 1999 (Mobile Alabama Bowl), 2000 (galleryfurniture.com Bowl) and 2001 (GMAC Bowl). He coached a pair of first-team All-Conference USA performers in center Sherwin Lacewell (1999-2000) and tackle Brian Rimpf (2001-2002), who later went on to earn a Senior Bowl invitation and was selected in the seventh round of the 2004 National Football League Draft by the Baltimore Ravens.
Prior to a pair of high school head coaching positions in the state of Georgia from 1995 to 1997, Shankweiler was Lewis' offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech for three seasons beginning in 1992, where he guided the Yellow Jackets' to their second-highest rated offense in school history.
Shankweiler first joined the East Carolina program in 1987 as offensive line coach and offensive coordinator, and played a key role in one of the most successful seasons in Pirate history in 1991. After falling to Illinois 38-31 in the opener, ECU ran of 11 consecutive wins and capped the campaign with a 37-34 win against North Carolina State in the Peach Bowl and earn a final No. 9 national rank.
Shankweiler began his collegiate coaching career at The Citadel in 1980, leading the Bulldogs to a top Southern Conference ranking in total defense and passing offense as defensive and offensive line coach before moving on to accept the offensive coordinator's position at Western Kentucky in 1984. A seven-time football and track letterman at Davidson, Shankweiler earned All-SoCon honors and served as captain of the Wildcats' track program in 1974. Shankweiler earned a bachelor's degree in history from Davidson in 1974 before following with a master's degree in physical education and education administration from Georgia State in 1980. Shankweiler and wife Patti are the parents of two daughters (Lori and Jennifer) and one son (Kort, a former fullback at ECU).
Bobby Wilder-Head Coach-Old Dominion University
Bobby Wilder, the former associate head football coach at the University of Maine, is in his first year as head coach of the Old Dominion Monarchs who will begin play in 2009.
Since arriving in Norfolk, Wilder has hit the ground running making sure that the Old Dominion football program is visible throughout the campus, the community and the state. He has honored hundreds of speaking engagements to a variety of organizations, but his most important talks have come with high schools coaches throughout the state. Wilder and his staff have made it a point to build a fence around the Hampton Roads community and the state of Virginia, with plans of building a first rate program with players a stones throw from the ODU campus.
In addition to his recruiting efforts, Wilder has also been an essential part in the planning and development of what are sure to be among the top football facilities in the country. In August construction began on the new $17 million Powhatan Sports Complex that will house the ODU football offices, athletic and strength training areas, locker rooms and two practice fields with artificial surface. Most recently plans were unveiled for the $24.8 million Foreman Field Football Complex. The project includes a new game day building, field surface, scoreboard, sound system, field enclosure and a contiguous parking garage.
Prior to his arrival at ODU, Wilder served on the Maine staff for the past 17 years and was promoted to assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in 2000 before moving to associate head coach in 2001.
As coordinator Wilder has orchestrated a balanced attack. The Black Bears averaged 29.1 points per game in 2004, and scored 29 or more in 7 of 11 games. Wilder helped tutor running back Marcus Williams, who rushed for 1,077 yards during his senior season, which moved him into first place in school history for career rushing yards. Maine also threw the ball a lot during the campaign as eight different receivers each had double-digit receptions. Whitcomb was at the head of the passing attack as his completions (213) and attempts (350) were the fourth most in a single season since 1950. His 22 touchdown tosses were tied for third most since 1950. Overall, the offense averaged an impressive 5.2 yards per play.
Wilder was named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston in 2004, which is presented annually to the top assistant coach in New England.
In 2003, the Black Bears had over 2,000 yards rushing and passing with 4,142 total yards. The ground game was anchored by Williams and the passing game was in the hands of then-freshman Whitcomb, who was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year as he posted 2,428 yards - the fifth most in a season at Maine.
The 2002 Black Bears finished the season with 4,702 yards in total offense, the most since a school-record 4,861 yards in 1989. In 2001, for the first time in school history, the offense boasted a 2,000-yard passer in Jake Eaton, a 1,000-yard rusher in Royston English, and a 1,000-yard receiver in Stefan Gomes.

Donnie Kirkpatrick is in his fourth season as wide receivers coach at East Carolina after joining Skip Holtz' staff Dec. 20, 2004.
He also serves as the Pirates' tireless recruiting coordinator, a duty that has produced notable results in the past four seasons such as Top 40 status in several national recruiting publications.
Kirkpatrick's first year in Greenville was noteworthy as he tutored newcomer Aundrae Allison to a record-setting campaign which resulted in a new school single-season standard in reception yards (1,024), a No. 2 all-time rank in catches made (83) and first-team All-Conference USA designation.
In 2006, he fine-tuned a corps that featured a pair of all-league performers in Allison and walk-on Phillip Henry who also headlined a group that averaged over 12 yards per reception and accounted for a total of 3,024 receiving yards - the third-highest single-season total in East Carolina history. Later in the spring, Allison became the first ECU receiver since 1999 to earn selection in the NFL Draft as the Minnesota Vikings chose the Kannapolis, N.C. native in the fifth round.
Kirkpatrick successfully mixed a blend of experienced and young talent in 2007 which resulted in 224 catches - 74 of those coming in combined fashion from sophomore All-Conference USA selection Jamar Bryant (team-leading 48) and C-USA All-Freshman Team member Dwayne Harris (26). In addition, a pair of his receivers played critical role during two notable victories during the '07 campaign as Juwon Crowell snared a 34-yard touchdown pass with no time left at UTEP to force overtime and Bryant was on the other end of a 36-yarder on a third-and-eight play that set up ECU's game-winning field goal against Boise State in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl.
Before joining the ECU staff, Kirkpatrick served as wide receivers coach at Western Carolina during the 2003 and 2004 seasons which followed a three-year head coaching tenure at Chattanooga, which began in 2000.While WCU topped the Southern Conference in passing offense (239.8 ypg) in 2003, Kirkpatrick tutored Catamount receivers Lamont Seward and Michael Reeder, who both ranked among the top four receivers in the SoCon with a combined 132 catches.
Kirkpatrick orchestrated one of the top aerial attacks in SoCon history while guiding the UTC program from 2000 to 2002, ranking first in passing offense (339.1 ypg) and total offense (453.5 ypg) during his initial year in Chattanooga.
His offensive units also finished third in passing in 2001 (192.7 ypg) and second in 2002 (220.4) during that span, which followed a successful year as UTC's offensive coordinator. The Mocs' topped the SoCon in passing (326.5 ypg) and stood third in total offense (454.4 ypg) in 1999, riding the efforts of DeMatteo, who led the league in receiving (76-977), and record-setting quarterback Chris Sanders, who captured conference passing and total offense individual titles. In addition, UTC set Southern Conference single-season records that year for most pass attempts (496) and completions (300). In all, Kirkpatrick was responsible for two of the top three passing (3,730 in `00, 3,591 in '99) seasons in SoCon history.
Prior to his move to Chattanooga, Kirkpatrick spent three years on Ron Cooper's staff as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Louisville (1995-97) where he initiated the development of Cardinals' quarterback Chris Redman, who finished his career as one of the top passers in school and Conference USA history. Redman, who ended his collegiate career with a league-record 12,541 yards and 84 TDs on 1,031-of-1,679 passing, threw for 1,773 yards as a freshman and 3,079 yards as a sophomore under Kirkpatrick's direction in 1996 and 1997.
Kirkpatrick also served on Cooper's staff at Eastern Michigan for two seasons, handling wide receivers in 1993 before earning a promotion to assistant head coach, quarterbacks and running backs coach in 1994 where he worked directly with former Detroit Lions starting quarterback Charlie Batch. He also spent four seasons at South Carolina (1989-1992) as quarterback coach and recruiting coordinator after obtaining his first full-time coaching position at Appalachian State in 1984, which lasted five seasons.

ATTENTION COACHES:
We are elated to announce that we have just confirmed our Keynote Speaker for the Beach Sampler on Saturday evening. Our 2008 Keynote Sspeaker will be Coach Jim Garrison, legendary coach from Chowan University, formerly Chowan Junior College.
Coach Garrison, is truly a man of character, integrity, and passion! It doesn't take anyone long to recognize his love for this great game and for the young people that he has, and continues to touch. He was recently inducted into his FIFTH Hall of Fame. Western Carolina University has just inducted Coach Garrison into their list of legends. Here is a brief biography of this exceptional coach and motivator:
Coach Garrison transferred to Western from Gardner-Webb, then a junior college, and played two seasons (1953 and 1954) for the Catamounts as a halfback. He was an All-North Conference selection and co-captain of the '54 team. The native of Weaverville and 1955 Western graduate became head football coach at Chowan College, located in Murfreesboro, NC, in 1958. He built that junior college program into a national power, winning 182 games in the process, third all-time among the nation's junior college coaches.
He has already been inducted into four halls of fame - the National Junior College Athletics Association, North Carolina Sports, Gardner-Webb, and Chowan. The football stadium at Chowan University was named to honor Garrison's career.
He retired as head coach after 43 seasons, but continues to serve as an assistant football coach.
Coach Garrison will address us as to "The Game of Life" and what a pivotal role football plays in this process.
Goals of the OBX Clinic:As high school football coaches, we began this clinic with three basic goals in mind:1) Make it as affordable as possible. We need young coaches to continue to instruct our youngsters as to the benefits of this great game. We want them not to have to take out a loan to listen to colleagues and to network with others. We do not want to forget the veteran coaches either. Our hourly wage makes us rich in affection and passion for our program and kids, but provides little for our professional growth expense accounts!2) To give coaches the opportunity to hear a myriad of qualified coaches on several topics of their choosing.3) Provide coaches with the opportunity to include their families as part of the clinic experience. To let them know how very special they are to each of us.
Questions? Should you have any questions related to the 2008 OBX Football Clinic, please do not hesitate to post your question(s) on this site or call one of us. We will be glad to answer any and all questions.Walt Davis – (252) 216-8708 Bing Mitchell – (252)975–6407 Rex Sponhaltz – (252) 441-3547
